As the holiday season progresses, the markets continue to impress. Last week, many energy, financial, and industrial sector stocks helped drive performance. Hitting record highs yet again, the S&P gained 0.35%, and the Dow jumped 0.40% for the week. Meanwhile, the NASDAQ fell slightly by 0.11%, and the MSCI EAFE rose 0.08%.

We currently have a relatively low VIX at 11.30 this morning, indicating that investor fear is still very low, although not quite as low as it was earlier this year. We have a dollar at a 93.29 level, inching back upward, and an Oil level at a higher level than it has been in several months. Expectations are that we maintain our current path for a while longer.

We are seeing the market rebound in a healthy way following the previous 12 days of volatility and decline. The sharper ups and downs are reminiscent of times past where 100 point swings were more the norm than the exception. Speculation regarding the new FED is surfacing, and will heat up towards the year's end, giving more volatility. According to our research, there is nothing to worry about at this time.

We are seeing the pre-emptive effects of the president's tax reform hitting the markets this past week or so. Especially today, where there is now some doubt creeping in as to his ability to get a legitimate version of the reform bill passed as it stands. My opinion is that unless the reform appears to look after the best interest of the common man, then we will end up with a rewritten version that looks NOTHING like its original predecessor, effectively being politics as usual once more in DC.

I have been reading numerous articles ranging from merely mentioning to outright celebrating the rally unfolding overseas at this moment. Given the current overbought market in domestic equities, this is not surprising at all. Looking at the Shiller PE ratio at 31.62 gives you a good idea of the level of risk currently in the US markets with its historic mean of 16.80. This, in layman's terms, says that if you were to buy the S&P 500, it would take you 31.62 years to recoup in terms of earnings ...

At this point, the market data is still stating that we stay the course and remain invested. We are seeing a minute amount of volatility in the markets this past month, but for the most part, it is steady as she goes. I am a big fan of making money, but at some point, this too will pass and the market will shift into a bearish trend, so having a plan B will be crucial.

At this rate, the sky is the limit, and the moon seems to be in reach! This market continues to defy gravity with every day stretching its legs forward. The key is not to get complacent or greedy which, frankly is really, REALLY hard to do.

The trend of this market just seems to be heading higher and higher. Lowry indicated this as of Friday, although in the short-term we can (and probably should) expect a pullback. Over the long-term horizon, the merits of this bull market condition continue to remain intact and favorable.

The foreign markets have been in a recent pull-back these past couple of days since North Korea has reared its ugly head again with threats of Nuclear War. Are these threats credible? Not in my opinion, but the media has to see something for clicks. The domestic markets have also taken a stutter step.
